Currency information datasets for people with visual impairment

[Technology for the marginalized 90%] Currency information datasets

The second episode of “AI for The Underdogs” will cover the startup Wesee’s currency information dataset.

How can this dataset help people?

Wesee and Datumo built currency information dataset to support people with visual impairment.

Did you know?

Cash transaction could be challenging for some people who have trouble with their vision. It is not easy to be sure if they are paying or being paid the right amount, and some people take advantage of that fact.

Nowadays there aren’t as many cash transactions as there used to be, but the hardships some may have to face still exist. In the hopes of reducing such problems, Wesee held hands with Datumo to collect and label currency datasets so that people with visual impairment could easily use cash.

How was this dataset created?

This dataset has been collected and annotated using Datumo’s crowd-sourcing platform, Cash Mission. Photos of notes and coins were taken from various angles and each was labeled. In order to make sure the AI model has high-level of currency recognition, we collected and labeled 55,752 s.

Dataset Specification

  • Total : 55,752 (27,876 JPG, 27,876 JSON)
  • Notes
    8 types x 12 categories x 145 per category → after final validation: 14,009 images
  • Coins
    8 types x 8 categories x 220 per category → after final validation: 13,867 images
  • Total data completion rate: 27,876 / 24,800 (112.4%)
  • Data format: JPG, JSON
  • 8 different angles per coin
  • Values of currency : 1000 / 5000 / 10000 / 50000
  • Side : F(ront) / B(ack)
  • Background : HAND / DESK / STUFF
  • Angle : 0 / 90 / 180 / 270

The currency dataset was created based on Datumo’s 4 core values:

[ ACCURACY / CONSISTENCY / BALANCE / COVERAGE ]

The dataset consists of images of Korean bank notes in a variety of angles, which enables highly accurate currency recognition regardless of the angle or situation.

Great opportunity to secure high-quality data

“AI quality heavily depends on the quality and quantity of datasets. We are delighted to have obtained great datasets in both terms through the project. The thought of increasing the possibility for the visually impaired to take a step forward in their lives have lifted the team’s spirit.

We anticipate the datasets built from this project to be made useful not only by us, but also by others with great passion. We also thank DATUMO for putting much effort in this project. ”

SeonTaek Oh, Co-founder/CTO

How would this dataset be used in the real world?

WeSee hopes the datasets to be used for the development of AI models for people with low vision.

The currency dataset could be utilized for building wearable devices or voice AI services to assist people with visual impairment to assess currency information with ease.

Development of technology may not equally benefit everyone. However, Datumo and Wesee hope that the dataset and technology we develop could help anyone who needs them.
